New York City, NY – In light of the ongoing challenges surrounding residency training-related visas for non-U.S. nationals, One Brooklyn Health (MUL’s clinical affiliate) convened a panel discussion to address these pressing concerns on August 11, 2025.
The session, moderated by Julius Romero, Senior Adviser at MUL International, featured two distinguished expert panelists who provided critical updates on J-1 and H-1B visa processes, as well as key information on the upcoming 2026 National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) cycle. Many of MUL’s senior medical students and alumni are expected to participate in this cycle, with applications opening in September.
Visa Update – Attorney Stephen Perlitsh, from the Law Office of Stephen Perlitsh (www.perlitsh.com), briefed attendees on the current landscape of H-1B and J-1 visa applications. He noted that although the clearance requirements for both visa categories have become more stringent, they remain available to eligible residency programs and their international applicants. NRMP Update – Dr. Conrad Fischer, Vice Chair and Program Director for Internal Medicine at One Brooklyn Health – Brookdale, outlined the 2026 Match process, timeline, and strategies for interview selection. He emphasized that strong board scores, limited attempts, U.S. clinical rotation experience, and compelling letters of recommendation are among the most important factors in securing a residency position. Dr. Fischer also highlighted that successful completion of USMLE Step 3 can significantly strengthen an applicant’s profile.
